For the last two years, the artist Elyasaf
Kowner has been wandering in an attempt to create a new type
of video art. This is the continuation of previous video art
works dealing with the act of relentless wandering, and linking
the sublime with the material in daily life.
Nowadays he uses a fictive identity, which he himself impersonates.
Through this image, he seeks to extend the capacity of capturing
people encountered while wandering through the local Israeli
environment, and also of capturing himself, as part of this
environment.
The very act of wandering is a reaction to an unbearable political
situation. It embodies a daily routine in a normal, sane place,
such as places to which "movies" take us. Instead
of being lost in the insane televised reality, Kowner proposes
a new kind of encounter with the environment, through the
image of a man wearing a hat and striped shirt - an image
which is subversive in that it is "unconnected",
and which strives to embrace all and restore harmony, from
here of all places.
